The surface of the model, no matter how well varnished, can hide micropores and irregularities that trap air and generate those annoying bubbles or the dreaded silvering effect — that whitish veil that reveals that the decal has not fully adhered. What it is for and how it works

The Decal Fix acts as a surface preparer applied directly to the area where the decal will be placed. Its formula creates a bonding base between the substrate and the wet transfer that:

• Clears the area and removes greasy or dusty residues that would prevent good adhesion.
• Generates a slightly adhesive surface that holds the decal in the desired position while it settles.
• Allows the decal to better conform to the model's contours, reducing the risk of air bubbles.
• Prevents silvering by improving the contact between the decal film and the surface.

Application method

1. With a soft, clean brush, apply a uniform layer of Decal Fix over the area of the model where the decal will be placed.
2. Slide the decal from its backing paper using the tip of a damp brush.
3. Position the decal in its final place and gently press — from the centre towards the edges — to expel excess product and any air bubbles.
4. Allow to dry completely before applying any finishing layer or protective varnish.

Note: the final result may vary depending on the quality and substrate of the decals used. It is recommended to test in a less visible area before working on critical areas.

Which models and substrates does it work with?

The Vallejo Decal Fix is suitable for static models, figures, and dioramas. It works correctly on surfaces painted with acrylics (including those from the Vallejo range), provided the paint is well cured. Its use is especially recommended on:

Do I need to varnish the model before using the Decal Fix?

It is not essential. The Decal Fix is specifically designed to improve adhesion even without an intermediate varnish layer, although on very matte or textured surfaces, a prior varnish always helps achieve the best possible result.

What is the difference between Decal Fix and Decal Medium?

The Decal Fix is applied before placing the decal, preparing the surface. The Decal Medium acts after, softening the decal film so it conforms to the contours and eliminates wrinkles. Both products are complementary and can be used together for an optimal finish.

Can I use Decal Fix on surfaces painted with enamels or lacquers?

In general, yes, as long as the paint layer is completely dry and cured. On lacquered surfaces or those with very shiny finishes, it may be necessary to lightly clean the area before application. We always recommend doing a test beforehand.

How much product do I need per decal?

A thin, even layer is sufficient. It is not necessary to overload the brush; a light film over the application area yields good results and prevents the product from overflowing the edges of the decal.
