Professional matte finish without reflections on ABS, resin, and polycarbonate. Kaleido's RapidAir water-based formula comes pre-diluted from the factory for direct application with an airbrush of 0.3 to 0.5 mm, solvent-free and with scratch resistance worthy of the best solvent-based varnishes.

The Kaleido matte varnish that eliminates reflections without adding weight or solvents

The KV103 Kaleido Colorworks RapidAir Matte Varnish from Gaahleri is the answer for those seeking an absolutely clean, reflection-free finish in their slot projects, static models, figures, or dioramas. With its 60 ml format, it is manageable for both occasional sessions and larger projects.

RapidAir Technology: what changes in your workflow

The RapidAir technology redefines the airbrush application of water-based varnishes. Instead of projecting small droplets that can form clumps or runs, the product is deposited in a continuous and uniform film, leveling itself almost automatically over the surface. This eliminates the two classic problems of acrylic varnishes: uneven coverage and orange peel effect. The result is a perfectly homogeneous matte feel, comparable to that obtained with solvent-based products, but without solvents, non-toxic, and cleans up with water.

Applications and compatibilities

The KV103 is designed to protect and finish decorations on the most common materials in the hobby:

  • ABS and polycarbonate: slot car bodies, both painted on the inside (lexan) and the outside.
  • Resin: figures, dioramas, and accessories for static models.
  • Metal and glass: thanks to the formula's adhesion, priming is not usually required in most cases.

As a high-performance water-based varnish, it is particularly valued by those working in small spaces or with limited ventilation, as it does not generate harmful vapours.

Application tips

  • Recommended airbrush: nozzles between 0.3 and 0.5 mm. The formula comes pre-diluted from the factory, so there is no need to add thinner under normal conditions.
  • Shake before use: as with any acrylic varnish, the contents may settle during storage. Shake the bottle well or use a magnetic mixer to homogenise before loading the airbrush.
  • Environmental conditions: work with a relative humidity below 80%. The product is properly stored between 5 °C and 40 °C.
  • Thin and successive layers: although leveling is automatic, applying in thin layers ensures total control of the finish and reduces drying time between passes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to prime before applying KV103 on ABS or polycarbonate?

In most cases, it is not necessary. The KV103 RapidAir formula offers direct adhesion on ABS, polycarbonate, metal, and glass. If the surface is highly polished or has been treated with mould release products, a light sanding or a coat of grip primer will improve adhesion.

Can I apply it with a brush instead of an airbrush?

The KV103 is formulated and optimised for airbrush use. Although it can technically be applied with a soft-haired brush, the results will be inferior to those obtained with spraying: the RapidAir technology loses some of its advantages outside the airbrush, and brush marks are more likely to appear in the final finish.

How long does it take to dry and when can I handle the piece?

The touch dry time is quick due to the water base, but complete curing depends on the thickness of the layer and environmental conditions. Generally, with thin layers and at around 20 °C, the piece can be handled carefully in a few minutes. For final hardening, it is recommended to wait several hours before subjecting the surface to abrasion or demanding handling.

Is it compatible with paints from other brands like Vallejo or Tamiya?

Yes. Being a water-based varnish, it is compatible with acrylic paints from the most common brands in the hobby such as Vallejo, Tamiya, or the rest of the Kaleido Colorworks range. Avoid applying it directly over solvent-based paints without a complete curing period of the colour layer.

Is the 60 ml format sufficient for several projects?

With an airbrush and thin layers, 60 ml is enough for a considerable number of pieces. In slot racing, for example, it is common to protect several bodies with a single bottle. If you are working on larger projects like dioramas or series of figures, you have the option to purchase multiple bottles of the same product to ensure batch continuity and a uniform finish.

Does it modify the base colour or the appearance of decals?

The KV103 is a transparent matte varnish. It does not alter the base colours or the appearance of previously applied decals. On the contrary, it is commonly used precisely to integrate the decals into the surface, sealing them and eliminating the shiny edge effect they often present.

The Kaleido Colorworks KV103 RapidAir matte varnish is a high-performance, water-based acrylic topcoat in a 60 ml bottle, designed for airbrush application with nozzle sizes from 0.3 to 0.5 mm. Its solvent-free RapidAir formula delivers a smooth, even matte finish on ABS, polycarbonate, resin, metal and glass surfaces, with no runs or uneven coverage. Scratch resistant and non-toxic, it is the go-to matt varnish for slot car bodywork, scale models, figures and dioramas.
