The white that every modeller has on their table: Tamiya X-2 in water-based acrylic

Within Tamiya's range of acrylic paints, the X-2 White is one of the most commonly used colours in static models, figures, and dioramas. Its formulation based on acrylic resins makes it water-soluble, manageable, and safe to work with at home, without sacrificing solid coverage and a clean finish.

Applications

The X-2 White is a cross-functional colour in the hobby:

  • Base and finish in aviation models, military vehicles, and cars.
  • Lighting and light effects in figures and dioramas.
  • Mixing with other Tamiya acrylic colours to lighten shades and achieve smooth gradients.
  • Application of preshading and zenithal highlights on miniatures.

Compatibility

This paint adheres well to the most common surfaces in modelling:

  • Styrene resins and common model plastics.
  • Polystyrene foam.
  • Prepared wood and cardboard.

For airbrushing, Tamiya recommends using their specific thinners to achieve the right viscosity and avoid clogging in the airbrush.

Finishes and behaviour

The X-2 offers a glossy finish that makes it especially useful as an intermediate layer under varnishes or for areas requiring light reflection. It flows smoothly both with a brush and an airbrush, with a low tendency for brush marks if worked with the correct dilution. Touch dry time is quick under normal temperature and ventilation conditions.

Application tips

  • Brush: Apply in thin layers and allow to dry between coats. White tends to require two or three layers for even coverage, especially over dark backgrounds.
  • Airbrush: Dilute with Tamiya acrylic thinner (X-20A) until achieving a consistency similar to skimmed milk. Recommended pressure between 1 and 1.5 bar for better control.
  • Mixes: Compatible with the rest of the Tamiya acrylic range. It can also be combined with paints from brands like Vallejo or Kaleido if prior adhesion and drying tests are conducted.
  • Cleaning: Clean brushes and airbrush with water before the paint dries. Once dry, it requires specific solvent.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 10 ml bottle yield for a regular modeller?

It depends on the application method and the surface, but a 10 ml bottle is sufficient to cover several medium-sized pieces or to have on hand in the palette for mixing and touch-ups. For large projects with extensive white areas, it may be necessary to have more than one bottle.

Can I use the X-2 directly from the bottle in the airbrush?

It is not recommended. Tamiya acrylic paints are formulated for brush use without dilution, but for airbrushing, they need to be thinned with Tamiya acrylic thinner (X-20A) to avoid clogging and achieve an even finish.

Is it compatible with primers from other brands?

Generally yes, as long as the primer is completely dry and compatible with water-based acrylic paints. Tamiya, Vallejo, or Ammo primers usually provide good results as a base.

Is the finish of the X-2 glossy or matte?

The Tamiya X range offers a glossy finish. If you need a matte or satin result, you can apply a final varnish from the same brand or any compatible one.

Can it be mixed with acrylic paints from other brands?

In general, it is possible to mix it with other water-based acrylic paints like Vallejo or Kaleido, although it is always advisable to conduct a prior test on a scrap surface to verify drying and adhesion compatibility.
