The Tamiya Silver that does not disappoint: real coverage, controlled shine and fluidity in every stroke
The X range from Tamiya has been a benchmark in static modelling, figures and dioramas for decades, and the X-11 Silver is one of its most sought-after metallic colours. Formulated with water-soluble acrylic resins, this paint offers a well-balanced equilibrium between coverage, fluidity and final finish: it covers without clogging detail, flows smoothly and leaves a bright silver tone that is not garish.
Features and applications
- Colour: X-11 Silver, metallic glossy finish.
- Base: Water-based acrylic, easy to clean with water or Tamiya acrylic thinner.
- Format: 10 ml bottle.
- Application: Brush and airbrush.
- Compatible surfaces: Styrene plastic, resin, polystyrene foam, wood and most common plastics.
Compatibility
The X-11 integrates seamlessly into mixed workflows. You can mix it with other colours from the X or XF ranges of Tamiya to adjust the metallic tone according to the effect you are seeking: cooler, warmer or with some aging. Mixing it with grey or black in small proportions yields worn silvers that are very useful for chipping and weathering effects on figures and scale vehicles.
Finishes
The finish of the X-11 is metallic glossy. If you need to reduce the shine to simulate matte or polished metals with patina, you can apply a satin or matte varnish from Tamiya once the paint is dry. Touch dry time is quick under normal temperature and ventilation conditions.
Application tips
- By brush: Apply in thin layers and allow to dry between coats. Metallic particles tend to settle; shake the bottle well before use.
- By airbrush: Thin with Tamiya acrylic thinner (X-20A) until achieving a fluid consistency. Low to medium working pressures favour a more uniform finish. Clean the airbrush with water or acrylic thinner after each session.
- Surface: A light grey or white primer as a base enhances the brightness of the silver. Over black, the effect is darker and more dramatic.
- Shaking: Essential for metallic colours. Shake the bottle for at least 30 seconds before opening and each time you resume after a break.
Frequently asked questions
Is it necessary to use Tamiya thinner or can I use water?
Distilled water works for light brush dilutions, but for airbrush use we recommend Tamiya X-20A acrylic thinner. It improves fluidity, prevents needle clogging and provides a more homogeneous finish, especially in metallic colours like X-11.
Can it be mixed with paints from other brands like Vallejo or Ammo?
In principle, yes, as they are all water-based acrylics. However, miscibility is not always perfect between different brands and may affect the behaviour of the metallic pigment. For predictable results, it is safest to mix within the same Tamiya range.
What surfaces does this paint accept?
Styrene plastic, resin, polystyrene foam, wood and common plastics in general. On very smooth or non-porous surfaces, a prior layer of primer is recommended to improve adhesion.
Is the finish completely glossy or can it be made satin?
The X-11 comes glossy from the factory. To reduce the shine, apply a satin or matte varnish from Tamiya (TS-79, TS-80…) once the paint is completely dry and cured.
For what projects is this colour especially useful?
It is ideal for metallic details on vehicle, aircraft and figure models: exhaust pipes, chrome parts, weapons, coins in dioramas or any element that requires a clean and bright silver finish. It is also used in slot to touch up or customise body parts.
Tamiya X-11 Silver acrylic paint (10 ml) is a staple metallic colour for scale modellers, diorama builders and figure painters. Water-soluble and compatible with both brush and airbrush, it delivers smooth coverage on styrene, resin, polystyrene foam and most common plastics. Best thinned with Tamiya X-20A acrylic thinner for airbrush use. A reliable choice for exhaust pipes, chrome details, weapons and any silver finish in 1:24, 1:35, 1:48 and other popular modelling scales.
