400 ml black aerosol from Acrylicos Vallejo: acrylic spray paint with excellent opacity and adhesion on plastic, resin, and metal. Ideal as a primer or finish colour for miniatures, static models, and slot components, with quick drying and complete respect for the finest details.

The black aerosol from Acrylicos Vallejo (VA28012) is one of those essentials that no serious modelling workshop should be without.

It belongs to the Hobby Spray range from Acrylicos Vallejo, a line of spray paints specifically formulated for modelling: figure miniatures, static models, dioramas, and slot components. With a capacity of 400 ml, it offers sufficient autonomy to work on several projects without immediate replenishment.

Applications

This black aerosol has a dual use that is widely adopted in the hobby:

  • Base primer: it prepares the surface and ensures that subsequent layers of paint —whether acrylics, enamels, or oils— adhere uniformly and durably.
  • Direct finish colour: thanks to its high opacity, it can be used as a final colour on chassis, bodies, diorama bases, or any element that requires a solid and covering black.

Its versatility makes it useful for plastic, resin, and metal parts as well as mixed surfaces, without the need for special prior preparations.

Compatibilities

The VA28012 is compatible with acrylic paints from the Vallejo range itself, as well as with other leading brands in the sector such as Tamiya or Ammo. Being a water-based acrylic, it easily accepts top coats of enamel or lacquer once fully dry.

Finishes

The resulting finish is matte-satin, neutral, and smooth, facilitating both brush painting and subsequent application with an airbrush. The deep and uniform black is particularly valued for zenithal lighting techniques, pre-shading, and light/shadow filters, where the dark base defines the entirety of the final effect.

Application Tips

  • Shake the can for at least 2 minutes before each use, until you hear the internal ball moving freely.
  • Apply in thin layers from a distance of between 20 and 25 cm from the piece, in short and crossed passes.
  • Work preferably in an environment with a temperature between 15 °C and 25 °C and low relative humidity to ensure even drying.
  • If the piece has been in a cold environment, allow it to reach room temperature before applying the spray; this prevents the formation of lumps or a grainy effect.
  • After each session, turn the can upside down and press for a few seconds to purge the nozzle and prolong the life of the aerosol.
  • On miniatures with very fine reliefs, apply an ultra-light layer to avoid losing sculptural detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this aerosol directly as a primer without applying any previous base?

Yes. The acrylic formula of the VA28012 is designed to adhere directly to plastic, resin, and metal without the need for an additional primer. However, the surface must be clean, dry, and free of grease.

Is it compatible with paints from other brands like Tamiya or Ammo?

No problem. Once dry, the Vallejo aerosol accepts layers of acrylics from other brands. For enamel paints, ensure that the base layer is fully cured (wait at least 24 hours) before applying strong solvents.

Can it be used on slot components like chassis or bodies?

Yes, it is one of its common uses. It works very well on plastic chassis and resin or injected plastic bodies, both as a primer before painting and as a final finish colour.

Does the nozzle get clogged easily?

If purged correctly after each use (by inverting the can and pressing until only gas comes out), the nozzle remains clean and operational throughout the product's life.

How long does it take to dry between layers?

Under normal conditions (room temperature, moderate humidity), a thin layer is dry to the touch in approximately 15-20 minutes. To apply layers of paint with full assurance, it is ideal to wait between 30 and 60 minutes.

Can it be used on already painted figures to correct a finish?

Technically yes, although care must be taken with the distance and thickness of the layer to avoid burying the previous work. On delicate pieces with a lot of painted detail, it is preferable to use an airbrush with diluted Vallejo paint for greater control.
