Kaleido K023 Brilliant Sky Blue: RapidAir™ technology for the perfect finish

The Kaleido Colorworks RapidAir™ series by Gaahleri is a line of premium water-based acrylic paints specifically designed for airbrush application. The shade K023 Brilliant Sky Blue adds brightness and character to any decoration project, whether for slot car bodies, static models, or figures and dioramas. Its eco-friendly formulation, solvent-free and non-toxic, makes each painting session a safer and more comfortable experience in any workspace.

RapidAir™ Technology: Lacquer behaviour with acrylic safety

The main challenge of water-based acrylic paints has historically been to replicate the smooth spraying and even coverage of traditional lacquers. The RapidAir™ technology addresses this issue at its core: it eliminates beading, uneven coverage, and sagging, achieving perfectly levelled and homogeneous layers even on curved or complex surfaces like slot car bodies.

The result is a brilliant and durable finish, with a hardness comparable to that of solvent-based lacquers, without sacrificing the convenience of water cleanup or the safety of a non-toxic formula.

Applications and material compatibility

This paint is formulated to adhere directly to a wide variety of substrates without the need for prior priming:

  • ABS and PC: the most common technical plastics in slot car bodies and injected plastic models.
  • PE and resin: common in figures, dioramas, and handcrafted bodies.
  • Metal and glass: expanding possibilities to chassis parts, wheels, or diorama elements.

Its versatility also makes it suitable for static modelling projects and decoration of figures or scenery, as long as a high-intensity glossy finish is desired.

Airbrush application tips

  • Recommended nozzle: between 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm. The product comes pre-thinned from the factory, ready to use directly in the airbrush without the need to add thinner under normal conditions.
  • Shaking: shake the bottle well before each use to ensure pigment homogeneity and avoid tone variations.
  • Temperature and humidity: apply between 5 °C and 40 °C with ambient humidity below 80% for best results.
  • Layers: apply in thin, crossed layers to maximise coverage and levelling. The RapidAir™ technology facilitates overlap without marks from passes.

Drying and curing times

Phase Estimated time
Tact dry 15 – 20 minutes
Total curing 24 hours
Maximum hardness 72 hours
Oven curing 1 hour (to speed up assembly)

Times may vary depending on ambient temperature, humidity, and layer thickness applied.

Finish and resistance

The K023 Brilliant Sky Blue offers a high-gloss finish with great scratch resistance, especially relevant for parts exposed to frequent handling such as slot car bodies or collectible figures. The final hardness achieved in 72 hours ensures that the colour remains stable without the need for additional protective varnish in most applications.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to prime before applying K023 paint?

No. The RapidAir™ formula from Kaleido is designed to adhere directly to ABS, PC, PE, resin, metal, and glass without the need for prior priming, simplifying the process and reducing the number of layers.

Can I use it with a brush instead of an airbrush?

The RapidAir™ series is optimised for airbrush use. Its factory pre-thinning and fluid behaviour are intended for spraying, so results with a brush may not be equivalent in terms of levelling and finish.

Do I need to dilute it before use?

Under normal working conditions, the product comes ready to use directly in the airbrush. If the environment is very dry or the nozzle is particularly fine, it can be slightly adjusted with the compatible thinner recommended by Kaleido.

Is it compatible with varnishes or finishing coats from other brands?

In general, water-based acrylic paints are compatible with acrylic varnishes from brands like Vallejo or Tamiya. However, it is always advisable to do a test on a sacrificial piece before applying it to the final model.

How long can I keep the bottle once opened?

When stored properly with the cap tightly closed, in a cool place away from direct light, the paint retains its properties for an extended period. Always shake before use to homogenise the pigment.

Is it suitable for decorating figures and dioramas as well as slot car bodies?

Yes. Although it is especially valued for decorating slot car bodies, its compatibility with resin, metal, and technical plastics also makes it suitable for static models, figures, and diorama elements where a high-intensity glossy finish is desired.
