Kaleido K109 Phantom Grey: chromatic depth and RapidAir™ technology in every pass

Within the Kaleido Colorworks RapidAir™ Series by Gaahleri, the K109 Phantom Grey shade is one of those technical greys that serves equally well for a sober and elegant competition body as for high-precision mechanical details in static models or figures. Its water-based acrylic formula, eco-friendly and solvent-free, eliminates the historical problems of water-based paints: pearling, uneven coverage, and sagging disappear thanks to the RapidAir™ technology, which replicates the behaviour of professional lacquers with the safety of a non-toxic product.

Applications and material compatibility

The K109 Phantom Grey is designed to work directly on the piece without intermediate steps. No primer required and adheres firmly to a wide variety of substrates commonly used in the hobby:

  • ABS and polycarbonate (PC): the most common plastics in slot car bodies.
  • Polyethylene (PE) and resin: frequent materials in static models, figures, and dioramas.
  • Metal and glass: for diorama details or chassis parts.

This versatility makes it a cross-functional paint: equally useful for preparing a slot car for the next club race as for painting a figure or a static model vehicle.

Finishes: gloss, hardness, and resistance

The finish provided by this paint is high-quality gloss, with a hardness comparable to that of a professional lacquer once cured. This translates into real resistance to handling wear, track scratches, and rubbing between cars, which is especially relevant in a competitive environment.

Application tips with airbrush

  • Ready to use: the paint comes pre-thinned from the factory and does not require additional thinning before spraying.
  • Recommended nozzle: 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm for a smooth and even spray.
  • Shake before use: pigment settling is normal; shake the bottle well or use a mixer to homogenise the tone before each session.
  • Working temperature: between 5 °C and 40 °C. For best results, work with ambient humidity below 80%.
  • Working pressure: RapidAir™ technology ensures a steady flow; adjust the compressor pressure according to your airbrush and the desired layer thickness.

Drying and curing times

  • Tack-free: between 15 and 20 minutes depending on ambient temperature.
  • Total cure: 24 hours.
  • Maximum hardness: at 72 hours.
  • Accelerated curing in oven: in just 1 hour, ideal for speeding up the final assembly of your slot cars.

Product warranty

If you detect lumps or changes in consistency within 365 days of purchase, Gaahleri will manage a free replacement without the need to return the product.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need primer before applying K109 Phantom Grey?

No. The RapidAir™ formula is designed to adhere directly to ABS, PC, PE, resin, metal, and glass without the need for any prior priming step.

Can I use it with any airbrush?

Yes, as long as the nozzle is between 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm. The paint comes pre-thinned from the factory, so you won’t need to adjust the viscosity unless your airbrush requires some very specific correction.

Is it suitable for painting polycarbonate slot car bodies?

Yes. Polycarbonate (PC) is among the compatible materials declared by the manufacturer, making it perfectly valid for slot car bodies made of that material.

How long does it take to reach maximum hardness?

Total curing occurs at 24 hours, but maximum hardness is reached at 72 hours. If you want to speed up the process, you can use oven curing (1 hour).

Is the paint suitable for interiors? Is there a risk of inhalation?

Being a water-based paint, eco-friendly and solvent-free, it significantly reduces the risk associated with inhaling vapours. Nevertheless, we recommend always working in a well-ventilated space and with the usual protective measures in airbrushing.

Can it be mixed with other paints from the Kaleido range?

The RapidAir™ range of Kaleido is formulated with the same base, which in principle allows mixing between colours in the series to obtain custom tones. However, we recommend always doing a test on a test surface before applying the mix to the final piece.
