The Gaahleri Grey Matte Primer that prepares your projects with rigor and efficiency

When the final finish matters, the primer makes the difference. The KP202 Grey Matte Rapidair 210ml from the Kaleido Colorworks range by Gaahleri is a water-based acrylic base designed for modellers, slot enthusiasts, and collectors seeking consistent and professional results. The grey matte tone is the classic starting point to reveal surface imperfections before painting, and this formulation addresses it with precision.

Rapidair Technology: direct application, hassle-free

The 210ml Rapidair container is formulated to provide a smooth, even spray without drips. The Rapidair valve technology allows for controlled product output, reducing the typical issues of conventional aerosols: uneven paint, build-up, or runs. Ideal for those working on batches of parts or needing to cover surfaces in reduced time.

The formula contains no harsh solvents, making it safe for the vast majority of plastics, resins, and metals commonly used in modelling. Once dry, the primer layer acts as an optimal anchor for colour layers from brands such as Kaleido, Vallejo, Tamiya, or Ammo, without altering adhesion properties or the behaviour of the final paint.

Applications: what type of projects is it ideal for?

  • Static models: standard grey base for detecting scratches, mould lines, and seams before the colour layer.
  • Figures and miniatures: the fine texture of the matte finish facilitates subsequent application of shading and highlight layers with airbrush or brush.
  • Dioramas: excellent as a primary anchor on parts made from different materials coexisting in the same scene.
  • Slot car bodies: prepares the surface of plastic or resin bodies for durable and even paint adhesion.

Surface compatibilities

The KP202 adheres well to materials commonly used in the hobby: ABS plastic, polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene (PE), resin, metal, and glass. Before applying, ensure that the parts are clean, dry, and free of grease to guarantee maximum adhesion.

Finishes and colour behaviour

The neutral grey tone and matte finish make this primer the most versatile base for any colour scheme. Under light tones, it acts as a neutral background that does not interfere with final brightness; under dark or metallic tones, it enhances the depth of the finish. The fine texture of the product, once dry, does not add noticeable grain, making it a solid choice for small scales where detail is critical.

Application tips

  • Shake the container well for at least one minute before use to homogenise the pigment.
  • Apply in short cross passes, keeping the can approximately 20-25 cm from the part.
  • Work in an environment with a temperature between 5 °C and 40 °C and humidity below 80%.
  • If the temperature is low, warm the can for a few minutes in lukewarm water before applying.
  • Allow to dry completely between layers to avoid wrinkles or lack of adhesion.
  • Store the can upside down after use and spray a second in empty to clean the valve.

Frequently asked questions

Is it necessary to sand between the primer and the colour layer?

It is not mandatory, but a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (1000-2000) after the primer has fully dried improves adhesion and removes any small dust particles that may have become trapped during drying.

How long does the KP202 need to dry before painting over it?

Under normal conditions (ambient temperature and moderate humidity), the primer is touch dry in about 15-20 minutes. To safely apply colour layers, it is recommended to wait between 1 and 2 hours. Complete drying in depth is achieved in 24 hours.

Can I use this primer with an airbrush or only as a direct spray?

The KP202 Rapidair comes in an optimised valve aerosol format, so it is applied directly from the container itself. It is not formulated to be thinned and used with a conventional airbrush; for that, Gaahleri offers primers in jars from the Kaleido range prepared for airbrush use.

Does the grey tone influence the final result of light colours like white or yellow?

With high coverage colours, the grey hardly interferes. For semi-transparent or very light colours, it may be advisable to apply an intermediate white layer or use the white primer directly from the Kaleido range. Grey is the most neutral choice for most standard schemes.

Is it compatible with paints from other brands?

Yes. Once dry, the grey matte primer layer from Kaleido acts as a receptive base for water-based acrylic paints from brands such as Vallejo, Tamiya, or Ammo, without compatibility issues under normal usage conditions.

Can it be used on metal parts?

Yes, the KP202 formula adheres to metal. For best results on metal surfaces, it is advisable to clean the part thoroughly and, if there is any oxidation, treat the area before priming.

The Gaahleri KP202 Grey Matte Rapidair 210ml primer is a water-based acrylic primer from the Kaleido Colorworks range, ideal for scale modelling, static kits, miniatures, dioramas and slot car bodies. Its solvent-free formula ensures excellent adhesion on ABS plastic, resin, metal and polycarbonate, and is fully compatible with leading model paints such as Vallejo, Tamiya and Ammo. The Rapidair valve technology delivers a smooth, even coat without runs or clogging, making it a reliable choice for both beginners and experienced modellers.
