The Tamiya Matt Red Brown: a versatile shade for models, figures, and dioramas

The XF (Extra Flat) range from Tamiya is a well-established reference among static modelling enthusiasts, figures, and dioramas. The XF-90 Red Brown tone is an earthy colour with a completely matt finish, particularly useful for representing soil surfaces, rust, aged leather, or uniforms from certain historical periods. Its acrylic formulation makes it safe and comfortable to use in any workspace.

Main features

  • Finish: extra matt, with no reflection.
  • Base: water-based acrylic, free from aggressive solvents.
  • Format: 10 ml bottle.
  • Reference: XF-90 / TA81790.

Applications

The XF-90 fits particularly well in projects involving:

  • Military vehicle models, where rust and earth tones are prominent.
  • Historical figures with uniforms in earthy or brown tones.
  • Dioramas where soil, dry mud, or aged materials need to be represented.
  • Weathering effects and chipping as a base layer under weathering techniques.

Compatibility

Tamiya acrylic paints adhere well to the most common substrates in modelling:

  • Styrene plastics (the material of most boxed models).
  • Polyurethane resins and polystyrene foam.
  • Prepared wood.
  • Surfaces previously primed with any primer compatible with acrylics.

They are fully mixable with the rest of the Tamiya XF and X range, making it easy to adjust the tone to the exact needs of each project.

Application tips

By brush: apply in thin layers and allow to dry between each coat. The natural flow of the paint allows for a smooth stroke without the need for excessive dilution, although a few drops of water or retarder can extend the working time.

By airbrush: Tamiya always recommends using its own thinners (such as X-20A or the airbrush thinner TA81082) to achieve the right viscosity. The paint flows smoothly once properly thinned and does not clog the airbrush.

Cleaning: being a water-based acrylic, cleaning brushes and airbrushes is straightforward with water or specific Tamiya thinner while the paint is still wet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix XF-90 with other acrylic paints from different brands like Vallejo or Kaleido?

In general, water-based acrylic paints from different brands are miscible with each other, although the final texture may vary. For predictable results, it is preferable to mix within the same Tamiya range or to test on a palette before applying to the piece.

Is it necessary to use primer before applying XF-90?

It is not strictly necessary on clean and degreased plastics, but it is recommended. A primer improves paint adhesion, especially on resins and surfaces that have been sanded or filled.

Can this shade be used as a base for weathering techniques?

Yes. The XF-90 Red Brown is a very suitable colour as a base for rust or earth in chipping, washing, or pigment powder techniques. Its completely matt finish accepts subsequent layers of specific weathering products well.

How long does it take to dry?

Tamiya acrylic paint dries to the touch in approximately 20-30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. Full curing occurs in a few hours. To speed up drying, a cold air dryer can be used from a safe distance.

Is it suitable for use with a double-action airbrush?

Yes, as long as it is properly thinned with Tamiya airbrush thinner. It is compatible with double-action airbrushes from any brand. It is recommended to adjust the pressure between 1 and 1.5 bar for a uniform matt finish.

Tamiya XF-90 Red Brown matt acrylic paint (10 ml, ref. TA81790) is an essential colour for military scale modellers, diorama builders, and figure painters. This water-based acrylic delivers a fully matt finish with excellent coverage on styrene, resin, foam, and wood. Ideal for rust effects, weathered leather, earthy tones, and base coats in chipping techniques. Compatible with the full Tamiya XF and X acrylic range, and easy to thin for airbrushing with Tamiya's own thinner.
