Cobalt Green PS-54 by Tamiya: chromatic precision for polycarbonate bodies

The PS range from Tamiya has been the benchmark in paint for polycarbonate bodies —also known as Lexan— for decades, both in radio control and slot racing. The PS-54 Cobalt Green (ref. TA86054) is one of the most distinctive colours in the line: an intense and saturated tone that under track lighting reveals a depth difficult to achieve with conventional paints.

Applications

Designed exclusively for polycarbonate surfaces, this paint is intended to be applied on the inside of the body. As the colour is protected by the transparent plastic itself, the result is a natural shine that no external varnish layer can match. This is the usual technique in preparing slot and radio control bodies: paint from the inside, trim, and assemble. This way, the colour is always shielded from scratches and contact.

The 100ml format is sufficient to cover one or several standard-sized bodies with a light and well-distributed layer.

Compatibility

The PS-54 is compatible with any body made of polycarbonate or Lexan. It is not recommended for styrene plastic, resin, or metal surfaces; for those substrates, Tamiya offers other specific ranges (such as the TS series or the X/XF for static models and figures).

It can be combined with the rest of the colours in the PS range for gradients, stencils, or camouflage effects. Compatibility between PS colours is guaranteed by Tamiya as long as the drying times between layers are respected.

Finishes

The Cobalt Green PS-54 offers a glossy finish once dry, which is greatly enhanced when applied to the inside of the polycarbonate. The intensity of the tone is uniform even in a single well-executed layer, although for maximum opacity a second light pass is recommended after the first has completely dried.

Application Tips

  • Shake the spray for at least two minutes before use to homogenise the pigment.
  • Apply from a distance of 25 to 30 cm in short, crossed passes to avoid drips.
  • Always paint on the inside of the body: the polycarbonate acts as a natural protective layer for the colour.
  • If you want to use multiple colours, apply the lighter ones first and cover with the darker ones at the end, or use precision-cut masks.
  • Allow to dry for at least 30 minutes between layers under normal temperature and ventilation conditions.
  • Store the spray upside down and spray for a moment at the end to clean the valve and extend the life of the can.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use PS-54 on styrene or ABS plastic?

No. The PS range from Tamiya is specifically formulated for polycarbonate. On styrene or ABS, it may attack the plastic and cause cracking. For those materials, Tamiya recommends the TS series (spray) or X/XF (can paint).

Do I need a primer before applying PS-54?

No, it is not necessary. The formula of the PS range is designed to adhere directly to clean and degreased polycarbonate. A pass with isopropyl alcohol or Tamiya's specific cleaner before painting is sufficient to ensure good adhesion.

How many bodies can I paint with a 100ml can?

It depends on the size of the body and the number of layers, but under normal conditions, a 100ml can is sufficient to cover between two and three 1/32 scale slot car bodies with two light layers.

Can PS-54 be mixed with other colours in the PS range?

The colours in the PS range are compatible with each other when applied in successive layers respecting the drying times. Direct mixing in the can is not possible as they are sprays. For gradient effects or two-tone applications, the usual technique is to use masks or stencils between layers.

Does the paint crack with the impacts from track use?

No, that is precisely one of the advantages of the PS range over other paints. Its specific formulation for polycarbonate gives it a flexibility that accommodates the deformations of the plastic without cracking or peeling, which is especially relevant in slot car bodies subjected to frequent contact.
