The light blue reference in spray format, direct from Tamiya's TS range

The TS series from Tamiya has been the standard for modelers seeking solid, uniform, and reproducible results without the need for an airbrush for decades. The TS-23 Light Blue is one of the most used colours in the entire range: a vibrant and clean tone that suits both static model bodies and slot projects, figures, and dioramas.

Product Features

  • Format: 100 ml pressurised spray
  • Colour: Light Blue — reference TS-23
  • Finish: glossy
  • Base: synthetic enamel formulated for outdoor use on plastic, metal, and wood
  • Manufacturer: Tamiya (Japan)
  • Reference: TA85023

Applications

The TS-23 is a versatile colour that finds its place in numerous hobby projects:

  • Static models: aircraft, cars, and military vehicles with colour schemes that include light blue as a base or secondary colour.
  • Slot car bodies: for personalising plastic bodies as well as for touch-ups and decorations on already prepared parts.
  • Figures and dioramas: useful as a base for backgrounds, architectural elements, or accessories that require a bright blue.

Finish and Compatibility

The TS-23 offers a characteristic glossy finish of the TS line, which looks great directly or as a base for applying Tamiya's matte or satin varnishes — such as TS-79 or TS-80 — to modify the level of gloss according to the desired result.

It is compatible with the rest of Tamiya's enamel paints and can be combined with the brand's solvents and auxiliary products. If you need to apply acrylic paints (Vallejo, Kaleido, or Tamiya's Acrylic line) over it, it is advisable to let the enamel dry completely before adding top layers.

Application Tips

  • Shake the can for at least one full minute before use, ensuring you can hear the mixing ball moving.
  • Apply from a distance of 25 to 30 cm from the surface to achieve even coverage and avoid build-up.
  • Work in thin and light layers: it is preferable to make two or three short passes than a single thick layer that may run.
  • The ideal application temperature is between 15 °C and 25 °C, in a well-ventilated environment with low humidity.
  • Allow to dry for at least 20-30 minutes between layers to prevent the solvent from the second layer attacking the first.
  • If you plan to sand between layers, wait for complete drying (minimum 24 hours) to achieve a perfectly smooth surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can TS-23 be applied directly to plastic without primer?

Yes, Tamiya's TS sprays are formulated to adhere directly to plastic models. However, if you seek maximum durability and uniformity — especially on parts that will be handled a lot, such as slot car bodies — it is advisable to use Tamiya's spray primer (Fine Surface Primer) beforehand to improve adhesion and detect surface imperfections.

Is it compatible with acrylic paints from other brands like Vallejo or Kaleido?

Generally yes, but always in that order: first the enamel (TS-23) and then, once fully dry, the acrylic layers on top. Never the other way around, as the solvent in the enamel can lift or crack a previous acrylic base.

Can I use a matte varnish on top to eliminate the gloss?

Yes. TS-23 accepts Tamiya's own TS spray varnishes (TS-79 Semi-Gloss or TS-80 Matte) perfectly when applied once the colour layer is fully cured.

How much surface does a 100 ml can cover?

It depends on the thickness of the layers and the application distance, but approximately a 100 ml can allows for comfortable coverage of small to medium parts with several layers. For large projects or vehicles at 1/24 scale or larger in their entirety, more than one can may be necessary.

Is it suitable for indoor use?

The spray contains organic solvents, so it is always recommended to work outdoors or in a space with adequate forced ventilation. The use of a mask with an organic vapour filter is advisable in any case.
