Compatibility and finishes

Tamiya TS sprays are specifically formulated to adhere to polystyrene plastic, the most common material in models from major brands. They also work well on resin with prior priming and on prepared metal surfaces. The finish of TS-24 is glossy, making it an excellent base for applying decals or finishing varnishes from the same Tamiya family afterwards.

It is compatible with the rest of the TS range for layering mixes and with TS spray varnishes (matte, semi-matte, and glossy) to seal the final work.

Application tips

• Shake the can for at least 2 minutes before use; the mixing ball should move freely.
• Apply in thin, crossed layers at a distance of about 25-30 cm from the surface.
• Ideal working temperature: between 15 °C and 25 °C, with low humidity. Avoid applying on very humid days or in direct wind.
• Between layers, wait 10 to 15 minutes. For a very smooth finish, a light sanding with fine sandpaper (P1000-P1500) between layers improves the result.
• If you are going to apply decals on top, apply a layer of glossy spray varnish first: decals adhere much better to smooth surfaces.
• For painting on lexan slot car bodies, always apply from the inside with the order of colours reversed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use TS-24 over already dried acrylic paint?

With caution, yes. Tamiya TS sprays contain solvents that can attack thin acrylic layers. The safest approach is to apply a very light first coat and allow it to dry well before the next layers. If the base layer is oil or enamel paint, there is no problem.

Is it suitable for airbrushing by diluting the contents of the can?

It is not ideal: the spray formulation is designed for direct application under pressure. For airbrushing, Tamiya has its range of acrylics in cans (X/XF series) and the line of lacquers in cans, which are designed for dilution and airbrush use.

Does it need prior priming on plastic?

On clean and degreased polystyrene plastic, it is not strictly necessary, although a thin layer of primer (for example, Tamiya Fine Surface Primer) improves adhesion and uniformity of the final colour, especially on very smooth or low-relief parts.

How much surface does a 100 ml can cover?

It depends on the number of layers and the porosity of the substrate, but a 100 ml can is sufficient to comfortably cover one or several bodies in 1/24 scale or several small models in 1/32-1/43 scale.

Can it be combined with paints from other brands like Vallejo or Kaleido?

In the same layer, it is not advisable to mix bases of different chemical natures. However, you can use TS-24 as a base layer and then apply Vallejo or Kaleido acrylics on top once the spray is completely cured (minimum 24 hours), with good results.
